The global market for personal computers (PCs) significantly contracted in 2022 and 2023 due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-war financial recession and inflation. However, the PC market began to recover at the start of this year.
After experiencing sales declines for seven consecutive quarters over the past two years, global PC sales increased by 3.2% in the first three months of 2024 (January to March). This growth trend continued into the second quarter.
According to a recent report published by the research firm IDC (International Data Corporation), global PC sales in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 3% compared to the same period last year. In other words, a total of 64.9 million units were sold in the global market from April to June.
Although the traditional PC market shows considerable promise compared to 2023, the Chinese PC market remains sluggish. Excluding China, the global PC market growth stands at 5%.
Based on preliminary data from IDC, Lenovo holds the top position in the personal computer market with a market share of 22.7%. HP follows closely with a 21.1% share. The next three positions are held by Dell, Apple, and Acer.
The main reasons cited for the consecutive quarterly growth are the slight recovery of the global economy this year and the rising interest and demand among consumers for AI PCs.
Interest and investment in AI continues to grow worldwide. From that point of view, it can be expected that the growth in the global market of personal computers will continue in the days to come.
